If you think of sideboards as traditional, stuffy pieces of furniture that can only be found in your grandparents’ dining room—think again. Designers love utilizing these storage vessels as TV stands or entryway console tables in spaces both big and small, thanks to their newfound versatility.

Case in point: designer Sarah Rinehart Fleischer of SRF Interiors in Brooklyn, New York, recently sourced a vintage piece for a client’s studio apartment.

Not only is it a bar cart, but a landing pad for lighting (there’s plenty of room for two table lamps to sit neatly on top) and a place to corral her overflow of entertaining essentials (things like taper candles and table linens).

“Using the sideboard carved out extra storage in a spot that otherwise would have been wasted,” Fleischer stresses.

We also spoke with a few other pros—Alex Yeske, Becky Shea, and Cynthia Tran—to poll their expert advice on what details to consider before having one shipped to your front door, in addition to the trends they’re currently loving and tips on how to find pre-loved wares worth investing in.

We evaluated several sideboards based on material, style, size, and the number of drawers and shelves.

This sideboard is built to last, thanks to its solid oak wood material and timeless silhouette.

This option is quite a bit more expensive than most sideboards on the list.

If you’re looking for a long-lasting sideboard that’ll serve as an investment piece rather than a quick solution, you’ll want to check out the Article Dako oak sideboard. The stunning sideboard is crafted from solid and veneered oak wood, which means it’ll probably outlast your needs and become an heirloom piece.

The minimalist aesthetic and natural finish is classic and won’t go out of style any time soon, while the interior features six generous shelves to hold everything from serving plates and additional china to board games and other household items you might not want to display.

The only downside is that this sideboard is quite a bit more expensive than other options on the list, but its superior construction and design might be worth the investment if you’re looking for a sustainable option that’ll last you for years.

These case goods offering ample storage are often spoken of interchangeably, and although they aren’t exactly the same thing, all have evolved from their traditional origins into versatile, multi-purposeful additions to the home.

While credenzas and buffets are sideboards, placement and size are key differentiators. Buffets, for example, are almost always found in dining rooms and are typically on the taller side to match up in height to a table. Credenzas, however, sit a bit closer to the ground and can be placed pretty much anywhere, often pulling double duty as media consoles or bar cabinets.

The curved corners offer a contemporary design, but it’s not too trendy to go out of style.

It’s made from a wood composite, which may be more prone to damage compared to solid wood.

High-quality sideboards can be expensive, but you don’t have to spend a ton to get a great piece. This affordable sideboard from our own BHG x Walmart collection offers a ton of storage, looks great, and is about five times less expensive than some of the other favorite sideboards.

The Juliet sideboard has four adjustable shelves, allowing you to customize to fit whatever you need, whether it’s a set of wine glasses, extra linens, or even bulky kitchen appliances. Plus, the four doors open and close with magnetic catches.

We love the contemporary curved furniture design, but the entire piece isn’t too trendy that it’ll go out of style in the next few years. The sideboard is available in light honey or black.

Note that this option is made of wood composite, which isn’t as sturdy as solid wood. You’ll also have to assemble the credenza yourself. It’s also on the taller side, so it may be better used as a buffet in a dining space or an entryway table rather than an entertainment credenza.

It features a lot of storage and cord cutouts, so you can use it as a media console.

This is made with real walnut, so we recommend keeping hot and cool drinks off its top, and out of the way of direct sunlight to prevent fading over time.

Designed by Blake Tovin of Tovin Design exclusively for Crate & Barrel, the Tate sideboard has a vintage-inspired look that we love.

Aside from its good looks, however, it’s still full of storage potential. We’d take full advantage of the three middle drawers with slide-mounted glides and two side cabinets, each with its own adjustable shelf.

Two cord cutouts on either side of the bottom make it easy to plug in lamps and other decor, as well as phone chargers. It also means you can use this as a media console if needed.

While we love that this design is made with real walnut, it may require a bit of added maintenance. For example, avoid putting any hot or cool drinks on it, and try to keep it out of direct sunlight if possible.

The unit arrives almost fully assembled.

The smaller shelf is fixed, so it’s not as customizable as some other units.

If you’re a fan of the farmhouse aesthetic, we’ve got you covered. The Verduzco offers the ideal amount of rustic flair with its tastefully distressed paint job and contrasting solid wood top.

But the two-tone provincial look isn’t the only reason it has us swooning. This unit also arrives nearly fully assembled—all you have to do is attach the chunky legs.

The contrasting, dark metal hardware (including the visible hinges) and inset paneling also speak to the unit’s French country style. You can double down on the effect with an old metal pitcher filled with flowers, bronze taper holders, and a ceramic table lamp with a woven shade.

The three doors open up to a smaller stack of adjustable shelves, whereas the double-wide cabinet shelving has to stay in place. Even then, it’s perfect for stowing away table linens and more.

A rattan sideboard, like the Reya rattan sideboard, will complement your boho or modern organic style. Made from mahogany wood, this sideboard features four cabinet doors that house shelves for added storage in your living room, dining room, or guest room.

Each cabinet door frame is hand wrapped in rattan, and the door fronts are wrapped with woven grasscloth. At the top of the cabinets, there’s a small storage shelf for decorative items or storage for plates, silverware, or serveware.

The curved corners at the top of the sideboard offer a feminine touch to add softness to your space. It’s only available in one color/finish, but the neutral tones will match a variety of styles.

It has a minimal look that you can design to fit your space.

Most of the options are a combination of particleboard and fiberboard, so it can be prone to wear and tear more easily than other materials.

At this point, the IKEA Besta storage system might be a household name. The versatile furniture line has been tapped by both renters and homeowners for its versatility as the foundation for a media unit, dresser, or buffet. It can be all doors with interior shelves or mixed with shallow or deep drawers—the possibilities are endless.

This storage solution is offered in several colors, so it’s easy to find one that suits any space. Most of the designs are sleek and modern, you can even add your hardware or paint it to the color of your choosing, so long as you pick out an amicable finish.

We love that this unit features two sections and adjustable shelves. Thanks to its custom capabilities, you can set up one side with shelves and one without them, depending on your needs.

It’s worth noting that this option is made of particleboard and fiberboard, which may not be as durable as some other materials. However, senior editor Jamie Weissman has owned one for two years and hasn’t noticed any wear and tear thus far.

The scalloped edges will add a playful and whimsical feeling to your space.

Assembly is required, and may need another person to help you.

If you’re looking for extra storage in a small dining room, the Millwood Pines Elanie storage cabinet offers a solution without taking up too much space.

This affordable and compact sideboard is about 30 inches wide. The two cabinet doors conceal two adjustable shelves where you can store extra dinner party supplies.

The scalloped edges along the bottom of the cabinet doors offer a subtle whimsical look, and the top of the sideboard can display wine bottles or even your dopamine decor. It’s available in four different finishes: black, brown, gray, and natural.

If you have a larger space but love the scalloped details, add two (or even three) to your space and push them together to give the illusion of one large sideboard. Some assembly is required, so you may want to recruit a friend or neighbor for help.

There are 12 punchy, colorful finishes to choose from.

It has an untraditional look that may not work with every home design.

Mustard Made’s Lowdown Locker may not technically be a sideboard, but we think it can certainly function like one and is nearly identical in size and shape. If anything, it’s just a bit smaller, which is ideal for fitting into tight corners.

The unit is made of powder-coated steel, which means it’s also easy to take care of—all it’ll need is a quick wipe-down to rid it of dust or any accidents.

We’re also fans of the streamlined, simple design that can be styled to either take on an industrial or playful countenance in your home. Plus, it’s offered in 12 bold finishes. While it may not be the most traditional option, we think it’ll make for a statement piece in your space.

You can adjust the pair of shelves it comes with. We love that you can also lock its locker doors, which is ideal if you happen to have curious little ones running around or if you’re considering the design for their playroom. Plus, this pick weighs just over 50 pounds, so it’ll be easy to move if you’re prone to rearranging the furniture.

Product Details: Material: Steel | Number of Shelves or Drawers: Two shelves | Dimensions: 39.4 x 15.7 x 26.3 in.

It’s offered in two sizes, each of which offer plenty of storage.

It’s more expensive than other options and is only offered in one color.

Simple yet refined, the Bryer buffet by Pottery Barn is a master class in letting quality, natural materials shine.

We were immediately drawn to the visible contrast between the matte black exterior finish and natural interior, all of which is completely constructed with kiln-dried wood (so you don’t have to worry as much about warping, splitting, or cracking over time).

This unit is only offered in one color. However, combined with subtle hardware, this piece is poised to blend in with any sort of surrounding decor elements.

But the glass-faced doors are perhaps the biggest draw, as this is the sort of sideboard you want to put your finest items on display, whether that be treasured ceramics or books.

And don’t be shy about piling on your contents—each boasts a weight capacity of up to 40 pounds. We’re guessing that’s a result of the English dovetail joinery.

Though that doesn’t mean everything has to be out in the open. Three top drawers (which are 31.6 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep) to hold anything and everything you can imagine.

We’re also impressed that the three drawers are held firmly in place by half-moon safety stops and that the whole thing ships with an anti-tip kit, considering its entire weight is 205 pounds.

Product Details: Material: Solid oak, glass | Number of Shelves or Drawers: Two shelves and three drawers | Dimensions: 59 x 18 x 35 in.

The sliding tambour doors are a great solution for small spaces.

There’s only one leg option, brass, which may not match every aesthetic.

If you’re looking to dive deep into the curved furniture trend, we recommend the Castlery Harper sideboard. Not only does it have curved edges, but the tabletop itself has an organic curve, which can also allow the piece to flow better in tighter spaces like a hallway.

What really makes this sideboard stand out are its sliding tambour doors. Not only does this provide a bit of vintage midcentury flair, it also saves on space—no opening doors into dining room chairs.

The sideboard is available in two wood shades, a mid-tone chestnut and natural, a lighter shade. However, there’s only one leg option, brass, which you may want to keep in mind if you don’t like to mix metals.

In addition to the sideboard size, the Harper is available in a longer, shorter TV stand.

The best sideboard in our books is the Dako White Oak Sideboard from Article. This high-quality sideboard and buffet is crafted from solid and veneered wood and features a stylish but timeless aesthetic that will transcend trends and last you for decades. It also features a total of six separate shelves, which gives you plenty of space to store serving accessories, additional china, and more.

When choosing a sideboard for your space, you’ll need to carefully consider the unit’s dimensions, as well as your intended use.

“Dimensions are really important when it comes to sideboards—for example, if you’re using it below a wall-mounted TV, you’ll want to carefully consider the height of the piece and potential styling objects,” Yeske says. “If you’re using one in an entry or hallway, the depth is most important so it doesn’t impede traffic flow.”

Traditionally, sideboards have been based on width and height (to best serve food, for instance), but Cynthia Tran argues depth is actually just as important, perhaps even more so.

Keep drawer depths especially top of mind depending on what you’re looking to keep there, be it an oversized serving platter or tech such as laptops and cameras, unlike table linens and napkins that can be folded up to all sorts of sizes.

The best material for a sideboard depends on your budget and particular needs—but it’s generally best to find a piece crafted from solid wood or a durable metal if you want it to last for years.

It’s also worth looking for a veneer finish or something moisture-proof (especially if you want to use it in a bathroom or to serve liquids from).

However, there’s nothing wrong with a blend of wood veneer and MDF, which tends to be a less expensive compromise.

A sideboard offers versatile storage options that can suit most needs.

“Sideboards can be used to store various items such as dining ware, table linens, serving utensils, glassware, books, board games, or even as a display case for decorative items, photographs, or artwork,” says Stephanie Calderon, CEO and principal designer at Stephanie Calderon Interiors.

Most of the sideboards on our list have at least two shelves. Many are also big enough for organizers and baskets to be added into, so that way when you open them up, you’ll know exactly where to reach.

“For residential homes, I love using sideboards at the entry foyer, to tuck away shoes, umbrellas, extra sunglasses, dog leashes, and small hiking backpacks,” notes Shea.

“I also like to use it in a living room for TV media storage, with a wall-mounted TV above. In the bedrooms, I would like to add a sideboard for additional storage, keeping in mind that the piece will complement an adjacent dresser. Sideboards are also really great to use in commercial projects like lounge rooms or private conference rooms, where you can tuck away storage in a design-savvy way.”

If you are using a sideboard as a TV stand, however, be wary of airflow. Shea adds that ventilation is important when it comes to storing gaming consoles or a Wi-Fi router.

Aside from Facebook Marketplace, our go-to online sources for vintage and antique sideboards are Chairish, Etsy, and 1stDibs. But knowing from personal experience that navigating these sites can be overwhelming, we consulted the experts on how they search:

Sideboards are versatile pieces of furniture, so how you use them is up to you.

“A sideboard can create a great storage solution and act as a focal point for any space. You can use it to store extra dishes and table linens for entertaining, as well as décor items like collectibles and pictures,” says Raf Michalowski, interior designer and founder of Meble Furniture.

If you’re planning to use a sideboard in your dining room, you’ll want to think about how it looks with the other furniture in the room.

“When pairing a sideboard with a dining table, it is best to have the sideboard slightly shorter than the dining table,” Michalowski says. “This allows for easier movement around the table and gives more visual balance to the room.”

“Pay attention to shape, finish, scale, etc.—as with anything in interiors, I think all pieces in a room should ‘hold hands’ and complement each other in some way,” Fleischer offers. “I like a mix of styles, so I would look for pieces that feel good together rather than pieces that match exactly.”
